What on earth is HVO?

HVO100*, or green diesel, is a renewable diesel produced from vegetable oils and animal fats. It is a fossil-free fuel that can be used in many diesel engines and produces significantly lower emissions compared to regular diesel.

Since 2015, we at SkiStar have been working to switch from fossil fuel to renewable and today 92% of all vehicles run on certified HVO100, including all piste machines in Sweden and Norway. And for anyone travelling with diesel cars to the mountains, there are great environmental benefits to be made.

−We want to encourage our guests travelling with diesel cars to choose green diesel, HVO100 - a significantly better alternative for the climate. We are currently working to find a partner who can provide certified HVO100, free from palm oil and PFAD** to our car-based travellers across the country. In the future, we hope to offer incentives through our membership club or other offers for those who refuel HVO100 on the way here. Once there, the car can be parked and guests can instead use our ski buses, which have been running on biofuel for several years,’ says Fanny Sjödin, our Sustainability Manager at SkiStar.

Advantages of HVO100

  • Reduces CO₂ emissions - up to 90% lower compared to fossil diesel.
  • Fossil-free - made from residual products from the food industry, for example.
  • Can be used in standard diesel engines - if approved by the vehicle manufacturer.
  • Lower particulate emissions - results in cleaner exhaust gases and better air quality.
  • Improved combustion - contains no sulphur or aromatic compounds.

Disadvantages of HVO100

  • More expensive than regular diesel - price may vary depending on availability.
  • Most engines are approved - check with the vehicle manufacturer before use to be sure.
  • Availability may be limited - not available at all petrol stations.
