Kjell Aurmo – The Skiing Legend with Nearly 80 Years on the Slopes

It’s no secret that fresh air and skiing are great for your health. Meet Kjell Aurmo, an 82-year-old ski enthusiast and instructor with SkiStar Guides in Trysil. With nearly eight decades of skiing experience, Kjell is living proof of the benefits of an active lifestyle.

A Life Dedicated to Skiing

Kjell lives in Trysil and is passionate about skiing – it’s on his mind every single day. His wife jokingly says, “The day you have to stop skiing will be the day you start to fade away!”

The energetic 82-year-old still works part-time as a ski instructor with SkiStar Guides. He loves helping others improve their skiing skills and finds immense joy in sharing his expertise. Each winter, Kjell spends around 150 days on skis – quite an achievement, wouldn’t you agree?

World Champion in 2019

Kjell is a qualified teacher and spent many years heading the sports programme at Trysil’s secondary school. Although he retired several years ago, he remains highly active.

In addition to his role as a ski instructor, Kjell competes in the FIS Masters Cup, the World Cup for veteran skiers. In 2019, he reached the pinnacle of his career by winning the World Championship at the FIS World Criterium Masters – a prestigious competition for the best in his age group.

Training: The Key to Success

Kjell finds great motivation in competition and is always striving to improve. “You always want to perform a little better than last time, and I still enjoy the thrill of winning. The only way to achieve that is through consistent training,” he says.

The FIS Masters Cup is highly competitive, and Kjell focuses on being well-prepared. Strength training plays a central role in his routine, and he aims to train four times a week. “Three sessions will do as well – you have to make time for other activities like cycling or running,” he adds.

Despite his age, Kjell continues to push himself. “Physical decline starts after 25, but you can slow it down through training,” he explains with a smile.

A Life on Skis

In Trysil, Kjell is something of a local celebrity, and many regard him as a legend. Kjell himself feels incredibly fortunate to live so close to Norway’s largest ski resort, where he can spend his days doing what he loves most. So, the next time you visit Trysil, don’t be surprised to find Kjell at the front of the lift queue when the skiing day begins!
