Travelling with children - tips for a successful ski holiday

First time with kids on skis? Many of us have found it a bit nerve-wracking. Read our tips for a successful days on the slopes. You can also make the trip itself a cosy time by preparing well. Don't forget a big dose of patience, you're on holiday!

7 tips for a successful day with the kids on the slopes

1. Keep a small bag with you where you pack a change of clothes - if the kids wet themselves, you won't have to go home.

2. Pack snacks and always have a snack in your pocket - you never know when you might run out of energy. It's okay to bribe!

3. Send your kids to ski school so you don't have to fight when you teach them to ski.

4. Even Valle skis without poles - it's easier in the beginning.

5. Ask the staff for help when you go on the lift, they are there for you and will be happy to help. Tell them it's your first time.

6. Don't forget that a big part of the experience on a ski holiday is the breaks between runs.

7. During one such break, you could go to a Valleshow - it's outdoors, it's free and the kids will have a fun, memorable experience with Valle. Check the app to see when the next show is!

Smart tips for travelling to the mountains with children

Make sure your children eat properly before travelling. This will help them avoid motion sickness and keep them healthy. NOTE! This also applies to parents!

  • Good travel drink: ice cream with a straw to reduce the risk of spillage. Water does not stain.
  • Sandwiches in portions are good travel food. Avoid sticky fillings. The restaurant car on the train is an exciting excursion. Some sweets are a good travelling snack but avoid chocolate in the car.

Always have it on hand:

  • A change of clothes
  • Paper napkins
  • Extra dummies (lots!)
  • Changing bag

Wrap small gifts to hand out when impatience starts to grow. Suggestions: Lego figures, cars, mini dolls, plastic animals, crayons or the classic 80s toy snake (Rubik's snake).

  • Keep vomit bags easily accessible.
  • Sickness tablets are available for children over 5 years old.
  • Typhoid tapes are available at the pharmacy.
  • Compete to see who can spot a red car/horse/yellow house first...
  • Say a word. The last letter of the word should be the first letter of the word the next person says.
  • Make up stories with children in the main roles.
  • Think of an animal. The rest of the family should only ask questions that can be answered yes or no.
  • Tell funny stories.
  • Angry game - whoever laughs first loses.
  • Rock, paper, scissors.
  • Yes or no. One person asks questions to the others. Answer the question without saying yes or no.
  • Silent game.
  • Craft books
  • Games like memory or Yahtzee.
  • Paper and crayons
  • Hobo chess

Fairy tales and songs

  • There are many great fairy tales to listen to for children of different ages. Discover, for example, Valle's Troll Tales.
  • Music is great in the car. Sing along at the top of your voice! You can find Valle songs on Spotify and on Youtube.
  • Singing along on the train or bus is not as popular. Load your mobile phone or tablet with music and bring headphones.

If you are travelling by train, you can go exploring or have a snack in the restaurant car.

Make the car journey a little easier by:

  • Travelling when the child is tired (naptime or evening).
  • Stopping at a rest area and playing for a while. Kicking a ball, climbing and running races.
